Neighborhood Advocates

Neighborhood Advocates helps residents become leaders for the animals and the community by working with neighbors and civic associations to raise awareness of animal welfare issues around them. We assist and encourage people to speak out to their elected officials about these issues and in the process, build momentum for much-needed change.
Barrio Dogs Neighborhood Advocates are local residents empowered to champion animal welfare in their own communities. They undergo specialized training to become effective voices for local pets by learning animal ordinances and navigating local regulations.

The Barrio Dogs Neighborhood Advocates program focuses on three main areas:

  • Community Education & Outreach: Advocates teach neighbors about proper pet care, the importance of spaying/neutering, and how to spot and report animal cruelty.
  • City Hall Advocacy: Advocates make sure our voices are heard by speaking at Houston City Council meetings, calling or emailing officials, and mobilizing other constituents to do the same to fight for systemic animal welfare policy improvements.
  • Resolving Local Issues: They act as liaisons between residents and authorities, discussing best practices for handling homeless, stray, or injured animals.
If you are interested in getting involved or learning how to become an advocate in your Houston neighborhood, you can find more information through the Barrio Dogs Neighborhood Advocates page or check out their broader Barrio Dogs Programs, email brittaney@barriodogs.org.
